(SHANGHAI - September 15, 2014) Today, the Microsoft Asia-Pacific Research and Development Group (ARD) announced the launch of Microsoft Asia-Pacific Technology Company Ltd., in Shanghai – a new entity focused on locally producing mobile first, cloud first innovation with global impact – at an event where ARD and its partners presented the latest technologies, services and solutions in the field of cloud computing, big data, Internet of Things and artificial intelligence.

“Business demands and scenarios increasingly require rapid and constant innovation in our mobile first, cloud first world,” said Scott Guthrie, Executive Vice President of Microsoft’s Cloud and Enterprise Group. “The creation of this new entity reflects Microsoft’s confidence in China as a world-class development, innovation and business center and its position as a significant contributor to Microsoft’s global success.”

The Microsoft Asia-Pacific Technology Company Ltd., is primarily composed of Microsoft’s Cloud and Enterprise China engineering group. Since starting in early 2005, the China team has been contributing to core platform products including Microsoft Azure, Windows Server, Power BI for Office 365, Visual Studio and e-Commerce platform.

“I am excited about the future as China’s technology and innovations are further integrated into the global economy.” said S. Somasegar, Microsoft Corporate Vice President and Executive Sponsor for Microsoft Global Development Centers. “As the cloud plays a significant role in enabling an ambitious national agenda and next phase of development, Microsoft is committed to promoting ‘win-win’ opportunities that see transformative gains distributed throughout the local ecosystem. We all share as stakeholders in China’s future success.”

Li Yaoxin, Chairman of the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization congratulated the launch of the new company, “In this crucial stage of innovation-driven transformative development, Shanghai is in great need of advanced technologies in cloud computing, big data and Internet of Things to accelerate our Smart City Action Plan. We welcome Microsoft and other leading companies to join us as we focus on our industry restructuring.”

“This marks a new chapter of Microsoft’s ‘in China, for China, with China strategy,’” said Samuel Shen, Microsoft ARD Chief Operating Officer and General Manager of Microsoft Asia-Pacific Technology Company Ltd. “Shanghai has long been a key focus of this China strategy. We look forward to making a significant contribution towards its bright future as we further collaborate with local partners to build smart cities in China.”

China is central to Microsoft’s global efforts, not only as an expansive and eager market, but as a source for talent and innovation. With the cloud as a main priority, ARD established the China Cloud Innovation Center (CCIC) in 2010 to help partners and customers in China. Early this year, Microsoft announced that Azure and Office 365 would be available to all China customers, making the company the first global public cloud provider with comprehensive cloud operations there. Microsoft Ventures Accelerator (previously known as Microsoft Accelerator for Windows Azure) in Beijing, an ongoing startup incubator since 2012, has supported 85 startups from different industries and areas – many of which have turned brilliant ideas into successful businesses – and reached over 100 million users in China and around the world through Azure. Microsoft ARD has also been active in its collaboration with top local universities and research institutes on cloud-related curriculum development and research project sponsorship.
