FI-WARE, an initiative led by the European Commissionwith the collaboration of Campus Partyand important ICT businesses in Europe, has announced that it has extended the deadline to submit projects for its Smart Societyand FI-WARE Excellencechallenges to next 24th of April, with €340,000 in prizes to be divided among the finalists and winners. With this new deadline, people who haven’t yet submitted their ideas now have the chance to do so, and those who have already submitted their projects through the CampusLabsplatform get a chance to improve them. Participants simply have to send in their idea for an app with social benefits for the Smart Society challenge and a prototype for the FI-WARE Excellence challenge.

The purpose of Smart Society, with €200,000 in prizes, is to promote innovating initiatives that will contribute benefits to society within different spheres: education, health, social inclusion, etc. and will be based on technologies related to the FI-WARE platform.

Those who wish to take part in this may propose their ideas for apps that can be developed later on. Some examples are solutions to universalize or improve the educational system at a local, regional, national or international level; tools to ensure that citizenship gains greater weight in the decision-making process of its community; the development of new concepts that will make the patient follow-up and/or diagnostics easier; new social crowdfunding or crowdsourcing services that provide clear benefits to society or boost the development of innovation. The creation of these initiatives are aimed at citizen cooperation that will encourage efficiencies to regenerate the productive system or the creation of health-based systems or applications, that will improve patient care and follow-up... In short, these ideas will boost public welfare in whichever sphere.

This challenge joins the FI-WARE Excellencechallenge that will give €141,000 in prizes to reward the development of applications. These may be of any theme but will be necessarily based on the FI-WARE platform. The deadline for both challenges is next 24th April.

The last FI-WARE awards were extremely popular, with over 700 teams made up of representatives from 20 different countries. Also, a total of €400,000 was divided amongst finalists and winners the prize of the two first development challenges: Smart Cities and Smart Business & Industry. A total of €800,000 in prizes, the FI-WARE challenges have become the greatest competition organized by the European Commission and Campus Party.

A panel of experts will assess all the initiatives submitted and choose the winners. These will be announced at the Campus Party event.
